Double Knitting

So I’ve been wanting to try double knitting and I think I came up with a plan. I found a rampant lion pattern and have some red and gold yarn so I’ll be making a semi-Gryffindor scarf, making up the pattern as I go most likely. Should be fun! Here’s my overall plan thus far.

Cast on 44 stitches with both yarns (44 of each color technically gives you 88 stitches).

Work with double knit technique 24 rows, twisting yarn strands together at edges to keep layers locked together.

Continue working in double knit following checkerboard pattern: *4 knit stitches color A (purl color B), 4 stitches knit color B (purl color A)* Repeat until end of row (ends with 4 knit stitches color A). Work pattern for 4 rows total. For next 4 rows use following pattern: *4 knit stitches color B (purl color A), 4 knit stitches color A (purl color B)* Repeat, ending with 4 stitches knit color B. For next 4 rows use pattern: *4 knit stitches color A (purl color B), 4 stitches knit color B (purl color A)* Repeat until end of row (ends with 4 knit stitches color A).

Color switch: All knit stitches use color B, all purl stitches use color A. Repeat for 4 rows.

Lion pattern: Start bottom row of lion, knitting color A (purling color B) for dark color on pattern (reverse for even rows).

Continue working knit stitches in color B, purl stitches in color A, until desired length.

Work Lion pattern, holding pattern upside down so the lion’s feet will rest on the (eventual) bound off edge.

Work 4 rows: knit stitches color B, purl stitches color A.

Work checkerboard pattern: *4 knit stitches color A (purl color B), 4 stitches knit color B (purl color A)* Repeat until end of row (ends with 4 knit stitches color A). Work pattern for 4 rows total. For next 4 rows use following pattern: *4 knit stitches color B (purl color A), 4 knit stitches color A (purl color B)* Repeat, ending with 4 stitches knit color B. For next 4 rows use pattern: *4 knit stitches color A (purl color B), 4 stitches knit color B (purl color A)* Repeat until end of row (ends with 4 knit stitches color A).

Work 24 rows: knit stitches color A, purl stitches color B.

Bind off, weave in ends. Add tassels if desired.
